Bright Cycling Shirts As Your First Defence
The roads and highways of the 21st century have become very busy and overcrowded places. Often it is difficult to negotiate our way through the traffic, especially during the rush hour with people travelling to and from work with very little on their minds but their destination. In this kind of environment, the cyclist is at a distinct disadvantage from a safety perspective. There are four cycling safety tips that every rider should know and put into action, perhaps the most important one being to wear a brightly colored cycling shirt.
Specialized cycling shirts are great for keeping you cool, dry and comfortable, because they are often made from moisture management fabrics that wick away sweat from the surface of your body. Thankfully, they are also available in a wide array of bright colors, some almost illuminous. It pays to do yourself a huge favor and wear one of these eye-catching colors when you are going cycling in the streets.
If you are riding at night, make sure you have powered lights on your bike, and that they are working correctly. Try to avoid wearing dark colors; there are some really cool cycling shirt designs in dark blue or grey or even black, but they will not enable you to stand out to other road users during times of low visibility. It's far better to aim for white ones, or lime greens or bright yellows and pinks. These are the kind of cycling shirts that will act as your first defence again being in an accident on the roads - the number one priority is
to be seen!
As well as light cycling jerseys, you should also consider other methods to increase your visibility. Many joggers wear the high visibility vests you might associate with construction workers, but they can be seen over very long distances. They are a great idea for cyclists too, worn over any other kind of top. And this way, you get to wear that "death trap" black cycling shirt at night, safe in the knowledge that your hi viz vest will enable vehicle drivers to spot you and avoid you.
